South and East Tour Stops – Pico do Arieiro
Pico do Arieiro is the third highest peak of Madeira with an altitude of 1818 metres. The views all around are stunning with clouds floating over the beautiful mountainous rock formations: it’s just impossible to describe. When weather permits the south coast, Curral das Freiras and even Porto Santo can be seen from here.
On the way to Pico do Arieiro, one can admire a unique stone-built pit (looks like a huge igloo) known as “Poço da Neve” built by an English family who once used to store ice, snow and hail from the mountains. Our stop here is of approx 15-20 minutes with a possibility of visiting the souvenir shop and trying a typical drink called “Cortado” that will definitely keep in the heat on the colder days…
